Answers for Letterfade on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, Android, and ChromeOS.

Basics

What does Letterfade teach?

Letterfade helps you recognize and read a new writing system. It builds familiarity with a script, not fluency in a language: it doesn’t teach vocabulary, grammar, or pronunciation. The words stay in the language you’re reading; only the letters change.

How do I get started?

Letterfade includes a Starter Library of public-domain books. In Books (Library on Android), open the Starter Library, add a book to your shelf, open it, and start reading. No account or setup is needed.

How do levels work?

Each level replaces more of the text with the script. Early levels change a few letters, and higher levels change more, until most of the text appears in the script. The number of levels differs by script. Scripts shows the letters each level adds.

How do I change the script or level?

Choose a script in Scripts. While reading, use the script and level controls. On Apple devices, − and + at the bottom of the screen move down or up a level. On Android, open Script and choose Fewer replacements or More replacements. The change applies right away.

What can I adjust in the reader?

Theme, typeface, and text size. These settings stay on each device and don’t sync.

Books & feeds

Which books can I import?

EPUB files without DRM. On Apple devices, tap + in Books and choose Import. On Android, tap Add Books, then Import. On Android, an EPUB shared or opened from another app also imports. Books with DRM can’t be imported.

A book won’t import. What should I check?

  • The file is an EPUB (.epub), not a PDF or another format.
  • The file isn’t DRM-protected.
  • The file opens in another EPUB reader, so it isn’t damaged.

How do I add an RSS or Atom feed?

In News, add the feed’s address or choose one of the suggested feeds. Articles from your feeds appear in News and open in the Letterfade reader.

How do I remove a feed?

Open Manage Feeds in News and remove the feed. Removing a feed also removes its articles, including any saved from it. Letterfade warns first when saved articles are affected.

How are feeds fetched?

Letterfade requests each feed directly from its publisher, so updating feeds needs a network connection. Like any web request, the publisher sees your IP address, your device’s user agent, and the address requested. Opening an article’s original link takes you to the publisher’s site.

A feed isn’t updating.

Check that you’re online and that the feed address still works in a browser. Some sites move or retire their feeds.

Offline

What works without a connection?

  • Reading books on your shelf, including imported EPUBs and starter books you’ve added.
  • Reading articles that are already downloaded or saved.
  • Changing scripts and levels, and keeping your reading position.

Refreshing feeds, opening original article links, sync, and store purchases need a connection.

Sync

Does Letterfade have an account?

No. Sync uses the cloud account you already have on your device.

How does sync work on Apple devices?

Letterfade syncs through your private iCloud storage. Sign in to the same Apple Account with iCloud enabled on each device.

How does sync work on Android?

Sync on Android is optional and off until you turn it on. When you enable it, Letterfade asks for access to its own app-data area in your Google Drive. You can turn sync off and revoke access in the app.

What syncs?

Imported books, articles and their text, feed subscriptions, reading positions, script progress, and news preferences. Reader appearance settings stay on each device.

Can I sync between an iPhone and an Android phone?

No. Apple devices sync with each other through iCloud, and Android devices sync with each other through Google Drive. There is no sync between the two platforms.

Purchases

What is free?

  • Levels 1–5 are free for every script.
  • Indigenous scripts are free at every level.
  • Reading, importing, feeds, and sync are free.

What does All Script Levels unlock?

Level 6 and above for scripts that aren’t Indigenous. It’s available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time lifetime purchase. All three unlock the same levels.

Does my purchase carry over to other devices?

Purchases belong to the store you bought from. A purchase from the App Store works on your Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account; a Google Play purchase works on Android devices signed in to the same Google account. An App Store purchase doesn’t unlock Android, and a Google Play purchase doesn’t unlock Apple devices.

How do I restore a purchase?

Open the upgrade screen by trying a level above 5 in a script that isn’t Indigenous, then tap Restore Purchases. Letterfade checks the store account signed in on that device.

My purchase isn’t unlocking levels.

  • The device is signed in to the same store account that made the purchase.
  • The purchase was made on the same platform: App Store purchases don’t unlock Android, and Google Play purchases don’t unlock Apple devices.
  • Restore Purchases has been tapped, with the device online. Until the store verifies the purchase, scripts that aren’t Indigenous stay at level 5.

If levels are still locked, contact support.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by the store, not in Letterfade.

  • Apple: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Letterfade.
  • Google Play: Play Store → your profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Letterfade.

After you cancel, the extra levels stay unlocked until the end of the period you’ve paid for. Your reading progress is never removed.

What happens to my level if access ends?

Letterfade keeps the level you reached. Without access, scripts that aren’t Indigenous show at level 5, and the level controls become a preview that doesn’t change your saved level. When access returns, reading picks up at the saved level.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by the store that sold the purchase. Letterfade has no account or billing system, so Letterfade can’t see or change a charge. For App Store purchases, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. For Google Play purchases, use the order history in the Play Store.

Troubleshooting

Letterfade is crashing or not behaving correctly.

  • Update Letterfade to the latest version in the App Store or Google Play.
  • Quit and reopen the app. If that doesn’t help, restart the device.

If the problem continues, contact support with the details listed there.

My books or progress aren’t showing on another device.

  • Both devices are on the same platform. Apple and Android devices don’t sync with each other.
  • Apple: both devices are signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud enabled.
  • Android: sync is turned on in the app on both devices.
  • Both devices are online. Sync runs in the background, so changes can take time to appear.

The text is hard to read after changing the level.

Move down a level with the level controls in the reader: − on Apple devices, Fewer replacements on Android. Levels can be changed at any time, and the change applies right away. Changing the typeface or text size can also help.
