In short
- No Letterfade account and no Letterfade server.
- No ads, no analytics SDK, and no custom analytics.
- Your library and reading data are stored on your device and aren’t sent to Letterfade.
- Sync uses your own iCloud or Google Drive storage.
What stays on your device
Your books, imported files, saved articles, feed subscriptions, reading positions, script and level progress, and settings are stored locally on your device. Letterfade has no account system and no backend, and this data is not sent to Letterfade.
No ads or analytics
Letterfade shows no ads and includes no advertising, analytics, or tracking SDKs. It doesn’t run its own analytics.
Sync on Apple devices
On iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, Letterfade syncs through your private iCloud storage, under your Apple Account. Apple operates this storage under its own privacy terms.
Sync on Android
Sync on Android is optional and off by default. If you turn it on, Letterfade stores a copy of your data in its app-data area of your Google Drive, under the Google account you choose. Google operates this storage under its own privacy terms. You can turn sync off and revoke access in the app. To do this, Letterfade uses Google Play services for Google sign-in and Drive authorization. Google Play Billing and the Play review prompt also run through Google Play services.
What sync includes
When sync is on, it covers your library and reading state: imported books and covers, articles and their text, feed subscriptions, reading positions, script progress, and news preferences such as More like this and Less like this, along with the topics assigned to articles. Reader appearance settings stay on each device. Apple and Android devices don’t sync with each other.
Feeds and article links
To update your feeds, Letterfade requests each feed directly from its publisher. Articles can include images hosted by the publisher, and those load directly from the publisher when an article is opened. As with any web request, the publisher receives your IP address, your device’s user agent, and the address requested. When you open an article’s original link, you go to the publisher’s site, and its own privacy policy applies.
On-device article analysis
Letterfade sorts news articles by topic with a language model that runs on your device: the system’s on-device model on Apple devices, and Gemini Nano on Android. Article text isn’t sent to Letterfade for this. On Android, the system may download the Gemini Nano model through Google Play services.
Safari extension
On Apple devices, the Letterfade Safari extension replaces letters on the web pages you allow it on, using your selected script and level. This happens on your device. The extension makes no network requests of its own and doesn’t send page content to Letterfade.
Purchases
Purchases and subscriptions are processed by the App Store or Google Play. Letterfade receives the product and purchase status it needs to unlock levels. It doesn’t receive your payment-card details.
Ratings and reviews
Letterfade may ask for a rating through the App Store or Google Play review prompt. The store collects any rating or review entered there, under its own privacy terms. Letterfade doesn’t receive the text of a review.
Deleting your data
Deleting Letterfade from a device removes the data stored on that device. If you used sync, a copy remains in your iCloud or Google Drive storage until you delete it. Apple and Google explain how to do this: see Manage your iCloud storage and Use Google Drive apps. Letterfade holds no copy, so there is nothing to delete with us.
Emailing support
If you email support, your email address and the message and any attachments you send are delivered to the support inbox so we can reply.
Children
Letterfade collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
